Prisma Health Children’s Hospital–Midlands recognizes his dedication to children’s health

Ron Neuberg, MD, has been awarded the Warren Derrick, MD/Helen G. Lynch Champion of Children Award. Neuberg was recognized for his decades of treating children with cancer and blood disorders at Prisma Health Children’s Hospital–Midlands during a ceremony at Segra Park hosted by the Champions Society, a Prisma Health Midlands Foundation annual giving society. The award has been given annually since 1990 to the individual or organization displaying extraordinary devotion and dedication to the welfare and well-being of our community’s children.

“Dr. Ron,” as he is affectionately known by patients and staff, retired in 2017 as the medical director of the Aflac Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Prisma Health Children’s Hospital–Midlands. He continues to volunteer for his favorite part of the year, CAMP KEMO, a weeklong overnight camp for children with cancer and their siblings. For his exemplary work and his lifelong devotion to patients with cancer and their families, he received an Aflac Duckprints Award in 2016. He currently works as a consultant with DHHS to improve the process for Medicaid patients receiving subspecialty care.

R. Caughman Taylor, MD, Prisma Health Children’s Hospital–Midlands senior medical director, said, “Dr. Ron Neuberg has had a distinguished career in pediatrics for over 30 years. Neuberg has won numerous awards for his service and teaching. He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015 and the Best Faculty Teaching Award in 1994 and 2008 by the pediatric residents. Additionally, he has served on numerous committees within the pediatrics department, Children’s Hospital and many organizations within the community such as CAMP KEMO Programs Council and the South Carolina DHEC task force on AIDS.”

Neuberg continues to demonstrate his commitment to serving others through his medical missions to Honduras annually since 1998, often taking residents and students along. “It is with the deepest appreciation and gratitude that our department of pediatrics wishes to acknowledge and thank Dr. Neuberg for all of his leadership and service by honoring him with the Derrick/Lynch Award, recognizing his many contributions to the children and learners of our department and Children’s Hospital, and more broadly our community,” added Taylor.

“I am humbled to receive the Derrick/Lynch Champion of Children Award. It is especially meaningful because it is an award for caring for children, an activity to which I have dedicated my professional life and from which I have already received great satisfaction. It is particularly an honor because I have so much love and respect for Dr. Derrick and Helen Lynch, who was the motor that drove Children's Hospital up until her untimely death,” said Neuberg.

The award initially was known as the Robbie Benson Award, but in 2001, the name was changed to honor C. Warren Derrick, MD, a founding physician of Children’s Hospital and Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics, and in memory of Helen G. Lynch, vice president of patient care services. Lynch is fondly remembered for her insight, energy, strength and advocacy for children.
