The Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology Clinic has expanded its services to offer access to new patients. “With two physicians now, we can serve more patients and expand our services,” said Judy Burgis, MD, clinic director.
“I’m really excited about the level of care we can provide,” said Kristl Tomlin, MD, who joined the clinic in October. Tomlin completed a residency in OB/GYN and completed a fellowship in pediatric and adolescent gynecology. “Dr. Burgis and I both are surgically trained. While contraception is part of what we do, we provide specialized care for any gynecological issues affecting young children and teens,” said Tomlin.
Some conditions treated at the clinic include:
- Menstrual concerns such as painful, heavy, frequent or absent periods
- Disorders of puberty
- Adolescent breast problems
- Contraceptive needs
- Vaginal problems in young children
- Sexually-transmitted infections
The clinic also provides hormonal management for medically complicated patients such as those with seizure disorders, heart problems and other medical conditions.
“There is a lot of mystique surrounding gynecological concerns of the special needs population,” said Tomlin. “This year, we are starting a specialist clinic just for treating children and adolescents with special needs.”
For hospital-based teams, Burgis and Tomlin provide inpatient consult services for pediatric and adolescent issues. “If a patient is being sedated for another procedure, we could schedule an exam under anesthesia, such as pelvic exam,” said Burgis.
“We can see urgent patients within a week and we also are available for emergencies,” said Burgis. “Since Dr. Tomlin joined us, we’ve added clinic hours on Thursdays and have improved capacity to see new patients. For any gynecological concerns for children and adolescents, we can help.”
