Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders

Faced with the life-threatening realities of childhood cancer and blood disorders, most parents would travel to the ends of the earth to get the best medical treatment for their children.

Fortunately, families in South Carolina need not venture far from home. The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Prisma Health Children's Hospital–Midlands in Columbia is the oldest and largest facility of its kind in South Carolina and one of the finest in the country.

Established to treat children from birth to age 21, our center began as a one-room clinic in the hospital's emergency room, staffed by one physician and one nurse. Even at that formative stage, we realized that treating cancer in children requires a careful balance of services to meet the physical, emotional and social needs of the entire family.

Our staff now numbers more than 30, including experts in all aspects of pediatric oncology and hematology. Located on the Prisma Health Richland Hospital campus, our eight-bed inpatient unit provides 24-hour care, and our outpatient unit has facilities for consultation and treatment for children of all ages.

Prisma Health Children's Hospital–Midlands is a member of the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), a National Cancer Institute supported clinical trials group. The COG is the world’s largest organization devoted exclusively to childhood and adolescent cancer research. The COG unites more than 9,000 experts in childhood cancer at more than 200 leading children’s hospitals, universities, and cancer centers across North America, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe in the fight against childhood cancer. This means that children in our community receive the most current treatment protocols right here in the Midlands, where they have the support of their families and friends while going through treatment.

In 1979, the long-term cancer survival rate in the U.S. was 50 percent. Today that number has grown to nearly 80 percent. There has been incredible progress in treating children's cancers, and we are committed to doing everything to make that number soar to even greater heights.

Soaring Higher

Like a kite soaring ever higher, the Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders inspires hope, love and joy. This is true of our physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, psychosocial team and staff, who understand the crises you face and respond with expert care and personal empathy. This is true of our volunteers, who give freely of their time and talents, guiding and nurturing children and adults through a sometimes perilous journey.

This also is true of our community, which has embraced the center's efforts since 1979 with an outpouring of financial support. Without the gifts of these fine businesses, churches and individuals, many of the Center's most important programs would not be possible. Never before have outcomes been more promising. Yet we must continue to fly ever higher in our efforts so that each patient will not only survive the disease, but live a long and productive life.
