Tom Bates
(1939-2010)

In 2005, Prisma Health Midlands Foundation launched a capital campaign to renovate and expand Prisma Health Children’s Hospital–Midlands to create an all-inclusive, freestanding pediatric hospital. During the campaign, Mary D. Dailey, a longtime Prisma Health Children’s Hospital–Midlands supporter, reached out to her friend, Tom Bates, a retired financial consultant, auditor and local philanthropist, to ask for his help. Bates was inspired by what he heard and gave a $1 million gift, the largest individual donation to the campaign. At Prisma Health Children’s Hospital–Midlands, he saw the passion and commitment the staff had for patients. Their dedication affirmed his decision to help provide a place where children and families would receive family-focused care. His gift was used to name the Tom Bates Day Hospital.
“It gives you a natural high to be able to leave a legacy. It feels great to give a gift that will impact the lives of so many children and families.” Tom Bates, 2007.
